Scots on the run to raise funds

A West Lothian Football team is to run more than 200 miles to attend a tournament in Southport, but they need your help.

Livingston Hearts Maroon under-13s are due to play in the North West Trophy in Southport in May but need to raise £4,000 to cover the costs of travel, entry and accommodation.

The club have embarked on numerous fund raising schemes but are looking to local businesses for sponsorship at the event.

Having raised £2,000 so far, Livingston Hearts Maroon are in need of some help and have made a plea to companies with links in West Lothian and Southport for help.

David Charles, team treasurer, said: “We have taken many fundraising approaches such as sponsored quizzes, bag packing and a race night and have received great financial support from the player's parents and relatives too. These fundraising techniques shall continue until we reach our goal however, we are concerned that we are not on course to do so as the tournament date draws ever closer. The entry into this tournament means a lot to the players and coaches that are travelling. The experience these kids will get from the event can't be quantified, and the lads are excited about playing teams from all over the UK.”

Over the next few months the 15 members of the squad will collectively run 203 miles - the exact distance between their training ground in Livingston and the tournament grounds at the Stanley High School in Southport. They will do this by completing 817.5 laps of Craigswood sport centre's 400 metre running track.

If you would like to help or know more about the sponsorship request on offer please contact David Charles, Livingston Hearts Maroon treasurer on 07982718277 or 01506 494738. You can email David at dav1d.charles@blueyonder.co.uk. For more information on the team please visit www.livingstonheartsmaroon1995.co.uk/southport_2008.aspx

Broxburn project takes off
broxburnBroxburn United Sports Club (BUSC)was formed in 2001 and brought together Broxburn Athletic Juniors and Broxburn Athletic Colts ( youth), Uphall Amateurs and the local bowling club, to form a community based sports club for Broxburn. The initial concept was to form a community managed sporting hub at the Stewartfield/Albyn Park site, to cater for the growing demand for community sport in the area. Under the council’s Club Accreditation scheme BUSC achieved Community Club status in 2006 and more recently Quality Mark status from the Scottish Football Association. BUSC are the first club in West Lothian with a full pathway from soccer sevens, through to 11-a-side football and on to the Junior game. The last few years has seen the Club grow considerably and demand has doubled in all age groups......more

fortnight of actionAs many of you will be aware, Show Racism The Red Card (SRTRC) is an anti-racist campaigning and educational charity. We aim to combat racism
through enabling role models, who are predominantly but not exclusively footballers, to present an anti-racist message to young people and society. We achieve this through:
* Developing activities to encourage people to challenge racism
* Developing campaigns and strategies to challenge racism at all levels of football and society
* Producing educational resources including DVDs, magazines, posters and education packs.
The highlight of our campaign is our Fortnight of Action (FNOA). This period of concerted action encourages participation from all sections of Scotland’s communities to celebrate diversity and tackle racism. Last year’s series of events was a great success with over 300 actions involving minority ethnic groups, community organisations, all 42 professional clubs, football fans, schools and young people nationwide. This was a significant increase on the amount of actions that took place in 2005. This October, we hope to build on the success of previous years and once again expand the number and quality of anti-racist projects
taking place during the Fortnight. To help fund the organisation of events or activities during October SRTRC has joined forces with the Scottish Executive as part of the 'One Scotland' campaign and Unison – the public services trade union to offer grants of up to £1000 for community-based initiatives. SRTRC has targeted the grants at innovative projects that challenge racism, celebrate diversity or overcome exclusion throughout Scotland. The total sum of money available will be £40,000, which is a 100% increase from 2006. This will allow us to make regional allocations (North, South, East, West) of £10,000 based on council boundaries. The Fortnight of Action 2007 booklet can be downloaded directly from our website by following this link www.theredcardscotland.org/action.pdf If you would like a hard copy of the booklet or further information,
email info@theredcardscotland.org with Fortnight of Action in the subject line.
