The players were invited to spend a day at Knockhill Racing Circuit courtesy of our team sponsor Smartycars.com. The meeting was the Scottish Motor Racing Club's 'Final Fling' race day and included:
The Scottish XR2 Championship,SMRC Formula Ford 1600 Championship, Scottish Legends Championship. Scottish Classic Saloon and sports car championship, and Scottish Saloon and Sports Car Championship and Formula Phoenix
and the highlight of the day for us, our team sponsor's very own Smartycars.com Mini Cooper Cup - the final two races to decide the championship winner. The team were met by their hosts in the VIP building that overlooks Scotsman Corner from a great vantage point. A they arrived they were just in time to see the first race of the day and the players and parents looked delighted as they witnessed a group of Ford XR2s hurtle down the hill toward them and around the track into the distance. The players thought that it was enthralling being this close to the action and having such great view. To the team's further delight they were given access to the paddocks and as such they decided to set off from our VIP vantage point and buffet breakfast to have a look around. They walked around the cars and enjoyed seeing all that goes on behind the scenes as pit crews, mechanics and drivers looked very busy getting ready for their particular event.
The players never shy of a photo session were delighted to get an opportunity to have their pictures taken with Kenny Thirwall and Mark Dryden, two of the Smartycars.com Mini Cooper Cup driver's and their race ready cars. They shook hands and had a chat before making their way to the benches in front of the Real Radio sponsored hairpin corner. The players least favourite request under normal circumstances is to be asked to sit on the bench however, on this occasion they looked delighted as the Formula Ford 1600 cars that we had previously witnessed in the paddocks, negotiated the difficult track corner and then sped off towards the finish line right in front of them.
It was back then to the VIP area in time for lunch where the team were treated to an excellent buffet by our hosts at the track. As the players waited on the veranda of the building we witnessed Kenny Thirwall (whom we'd met earlier) win the first of the day's the two Smartycars.com Mini Cooper Cup races to take the championship to an exciting final race decider.
During lunch we met Bill and Ann Margaret of our sponsors, along with Mini Cup driver Vic Covey Junior. The day was to get even better for the players when they were asked to jump into the seat of Vic's treasured number 7 racing Mini Cooper in order to see the car from the driver's perspective. At the same time huge slabs of chocolate cake were being laid out in the VIP building for everyone to join! The kids had a question and answer session with Vic followed by some encouraging words from our sponsors for our season ahead.
The team left the VIP area again after lunch to stretch their legs making their way over to the centre of the track where they were met by the race commentator. He announced our team's presence through the track's tannoy system to all that were listening. The players gave a round of applause to their new fans. The team had a great view of the track from here too and watched as several races took place around them. As they started heading back they stopped in front of the bridge bridge that takes spectators to and from the centre of the track to witness the legends - 5/8 th scale 1930 American saloon cars - come towards us at full speed and pass under the bridge. The noise as they passed under the bridge was incredible.
The team walked around the track and took their seats next to the grid in front of the finish line. The players gave a big round of applause to the drivers that were lining up in their cars for the final race of the Smartycars.com Mini Cooper Cup. This was the decider. Unfortunately Kenny Thirwall was to leave the event early as he crashed out of the race on the third lap at Butcher's corner. After the restart and confirmation that Kenny was ok the players focused their support on Vic Covey Jnr though and were delighted to get a wave from him as he finished the race in 3rd place. We ran round to the presentation area in time to witness Mark Dryden and Vic Covey Jnr - whom we'd met earlier - take their stand on the podium.
It was the highlight of our day and we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that was involved; Vic, Kenny and Mark. The VIP area staff, Knockhill pit crews stewards, announcers, drivers and staff. A very special thanks to Bill and Ann Margaret for arranging a truly unforgettable experience from the players, officials parents and family of Livingston Hearts Maroon under 13.
