What a great tribute please support us in our quest to rename Saughton enclosure to the CRAIG GOWANS STADIUM

we are now into our 4th year of Craigs Charity match

At times, I suspect there is a real longing among many football fans in Scotland for the game to be taken to a different and higher level. Well, a great example of 'what could be' in this country of ours was to be seen at Saughton Enclosure, when it appears just about everyone wanted to be involved in the latest staging of this massive event took place. Scotland team boss, Craig Levein was there in charge of a team of former Scottish International stars and although the scoreline was of no great importance on such an occasion, the Hutchison Vale select won 4-3. This event and many others over the years since Craig died in a tragic accident while with Falkirk FC, has grown and grown and the latest staging by Lothian/Hutchison Vale football clubs was the biggest and possibly the best of them all.

I have no idea how many people were in the enclosure but the main thrust of the day was to raise money for the Craig Gowans Memorial Fund and it was totally gratifying to see the mini-ambulance that this fund has provided through the link with the Sick Kids Foundation. Even better than the football game and all that surrounded it was the sight of three dsabled children getting their picture taken with Craig Levein. The Gowans family were also there and what an exceptional family this is. I can only imagine the suffering and what it is like to lose such a wonderful son at the age of 17 years, but they are an example to all, especially me, in how to handle grief. Craig's mum and dad, Sheila and John had what is unending support from their daughter, Lyndsay, and their two sons, Darren and Dean. Radio Forth were there as well and it was in every way a great family day out. Youth Football Scotland provided complete coverage from all angles and parked on the running track was a vehicle from Sky TV.

A bouncy castle did great business and a food stall and other side attractions ensured this was more than a football game. It was primarlly a game for a cup in Craig's memory but it was also a triumph to the dedication of the Gowans family to keep alive the name of a treasured son and brother. From a purely football view,. it appeared to me an example of how to stage a football game. I have heard and read so much over the years on how we in Scotland must change our image and get away from the booze, swearing and all the rest that has resulted in huge numbers of fans deserting the game at the top level. Well, the Craig Gowans Memorial Cup event at Saughton Enclosure was a real example of how we could achieve that aim. The crowds were out in massive numbers, the place was alive with the sounds of fun and laughter and no alcohol in sight or foul language to be heard to spoil the occasion either. Just good football to watch and admire and dare I say it: "Good, clean family fun to enjoy!"

The Craig Gowans Memorial Fund is unique as it is dedicated to the memory of a wonderful young person. I attend football at many different venues and have done so over many years. I have seen all that is bad in the game in the process and it is ongoing but there is an even greater force now, and that is a real desire to lift ourselves up to a different level and make watching the greatest team game in the world a totally enjoyable experience. The prime example of what it could be like was to be seen and experienced at Saughton Enclosure. I am a friend and supporter of the Gowans family but I am just one of thousands. If we are looking for people to lead us to greater horizons I would nominate this family as being the perfect role models to do just that. For a start, why not rename Saughton Enclosure the Craig Gowans Stadium. And build on all the good that this family and their army of supporters can bring to the game. I for one pledge my support to this memorable family and their ongoing work to help sick children - and in football as well!

Subject: McDonald's/Sunday Mail Grassroots Awards

Hi All,

McDonald's/Sunday Mail Grassroots Awards

The Scottish FA along with our partners at McDonald's and the Sunday
Mail are looking for your nominations for the forthcoming annual awards
which will take place on Thursday the 3rd of February 2011 at Hampden
Park, Glasgow.

The 2011 award categories are:

Best Coach in Youth Football - New category
This category focuses on the huge role that the coach plays in creating
the best possible experience for young players. We are looking for a
coach who encourages the development of the player as well as the
person, creates an environment for the team to improve, and has worked
hard to improve their own knowledge of the game.

Best Volunteer in Youth Football
Volunteers are the lifeblood of the game and central to the success of
any football club. Volunteers will cover every job in the book and more,
from acting as secretary, administrator and taxi driver to providing
pitch and facility maintenance and raising funds. The list is endless
and all clubs have someone they call the ‘Person that gets things
done’! We are looking for that person.

Best Volunteer in Schools Football - New category
Schools football has long been the starting point for many of our
footballing legends and continues to provide thousands of young people
with their first experience of the game. We are looking for the teacher,
janitor, pupil or parent who dedicates their own time to getting young
people active during and after school.

Best Youth Football Club of the Year - New category
Grassroots Clubs provide the platform for our young players to play the
game week in and week out. Without clubs in communities across the
country there would be no game. We are looking for a youth football club
that is progressive and inclusive and has gone beyond the basics to
deliver a great experience for its players, coaches and volunteers. The
club will have achieved some level of Scottish FA Quality Mark.

Best Volunteer in Adult Football
The adult amateur game in Scotland remains strong and well supported.
It is an area where true unsung heroes commit their time, energy and
passion to ensure that the game remains available long after players'
youth and school football days are over. There are volunteers at every
club across the country working tirelessly to allow thousands of players
to carry their playing ambitions long into adulthood.

Best Volunteer in Disability Football
Disability football opportunities in Scotland have grown greatly over
the years. Volunteers across the country work tirelessly to provide many
people outside of mainstream football with the chance, not only to play
for fun, but to show their ability on a European and World stage.

Best Volunteer in Women's/Girls' Football
Girls and women's football is the fastest growing sport in the world
and continues to grow apace in Scotland. A strong programme has
developed for for female players and clubs at all levels. We are looking
for a passionate volunteer who makes things happen in the girls’ and
women's game.

Merit Award for Services to Football
Our top award recognises unwavering involvement and commitment to the
grassroots game. Here we honour the volunteer who has not only had
longevity in the game but goes way beyond their duties for the benefit
of others. In many cases this individual will be involved in a number of
football organisations, holding down various positions and committing
huge amounts of time to the game.

Subject: Coach Co-ordinator Mentoring - Next Group Sessions

> ** High Priority **
>
> Dear All Club Representative/Coach Co-ordinator,
>
> Our next Coach Co-ordinator workshop will take place on Wednesday the 25th
> August and will now be at Peffermill Playing Fields, Edinburgh at 6.30pm.
> This was originally due to take place at Meggetland however as the grass
> pitch is being replaced by a 3G surface from next week we will now hold
> the event at Peffermill.
>
> I can also confirm that we have been fortunate enough to have confirmed
> Scottish FA Regional Manager for the South West Richie Wilson who is

> Andrew Gould, Scottish FA Head of Regional Development.  Both are formerly
> of Rangers Football Club and will be delivering practical and theory

> in a practical session.
>
> If you could confirm the attendance of your Club Coach Co-ordinator by the

Subject: Scottish FA Quality Mark Coach Education discount

Application form 2010

> ** High Priority **
>
> Dear All,
>
> As you are aware, all Clubs working towards gaining Quality Mark
> Accreditation are eligable for discounted coach education for levels 1, 2
> and 3 which has to be authorised by myself.
>
> Due to the large number of Clubs now involved in the accreditation
> programme, our budget for discounting courses is starting to stretch thin.
> In order that we continue to offer heavily reduced fees for these courses
> in our support to your Club to gain accreditation we will now be asking
> that all application forms and payment are sent to the Scottish FA South
> East Regional Office.
>
> This will allow us to monitor applications prior to courses commencing.
> The Regional Office will then forward any details on to the relevant
> delivering local authority.  Any applications sent directly to the
> delivering Local Authority will have their application returned which may
> result in the candidate missing out on a place on course.  This will
> remain the case for the remainder of 2010.
>
> All applications must be sent to us at;
>
> Scottish FA South East Region
> McArthur Pavilion
> 42 Peffermill Road
> Edinburgh
> EH16 5LL
>
> Please note that all cheques should be made payable to the Scottish FA.
>
> Should you have any questions on any of the above, please speak to any
> member of the Scottish FA South East Region staff.
>
> Kind regards,
