broxBroxburn United Sports Club (BUSC)was formed in 2001 and brought together Broxburn Athletic Juniors and Broxburn
Athletic Colts ( youth), Uphall Amateurs and the local bowling club, to form a community based sports club for
Broxburn. The initial concept was to form a community managed sporting hub at the Stewartfield/Albyn Park site,
to cater for the growing demand for community sport in the area. Under the council’s Club Accreditation scheme
BUSC achieved Community Club status in 2006 and more recently Quality Mark status from the Scottish Football
Association. BUSC are the first club in West Lothian with a full pathway from soccer sevens, through to 11-a-side football and on to the Junior game. The last few years has seen the Club grow considerably and demand has doubled in all age groups. The community club caters for approximately 500 young people from ages 5-19 providing coaching and organising participation in local leagues and competitions throughout the football season. The club has a strong and very able management committee who recognised early on in the development of the club that the existing facilities would need to be replaced, to cater for the growth in membership and provide a good quality environment for members, coaches and volunteers. BUSC have achieved significant growth in sports participation, despite the poor quality outdoor changing facilities they have been using to date. The project proposal will bring together a new pavilion complex and the first Third Generation synthetic turf pitch for West Lothian. The new pitch will replace the existing grass pitch at Albyn Park The new facilities will have a major impact on the delivery of community sport in the Broxburn locality, contributing to increased participation in sport and physical activity. The facilities will also be available for other uses, such as school use, particularly for one-off and ad hoc events. BUSC will have a state of the art changing room complex and meeting rooms with 21st century facilities. BUSC will have a new home and the community in Broxburn will have a new state of the art astroturf pitch. Capital Expenditure The estimated cost of the new sports facility is £2.324 million. This cost is subject to further site investigations at the Albyn Park / Stewartfield site. West Lothian Council has committed to £1.6 million . Planning permission was granted by the council on Wednesday 31st October. On Thursday 1st November a comprehensive Stage 2 Lottery Bid was deposited with Sports Scotland. SportsScotland has allocated the BUSC project “High Priority ” status and we are hopeful of being granted up to £400,000. Working with PMR leisure we are also working on grant applications.
