Get A Head-Start : Scottish FA South East Pre-Season Training Techniques Workshop
Monday 17th May – Peffermill Playing Fields, Edinburgh (6.30pm – 8.30pm)
A good pre-season is a must for all professional players, but is also hugely valuable for all children, youth, amateur and junior players.
For managers and coaches across the country, structuring their team's pre-season programme correctly can make a huge difference to their prospects for the season as well as the long-term development of their players.
Whilst lapping around local parks or informal sessions are fine for keeping fitness ticking over there is no substitute for a suitably structured pre-season training programme. The Scottish FA South East Region staff have been liaising with various national staff to devise a workshop aimed at coaches working with grassroots and part-time players. Scottish FA Borders Development Officer and Coach Education Tutor, Dougie Anderson has been working with Scottish FA Head of Coach Education, Donald Park and National Teams Sport Scientist, Brian Ewing to develop a programme that is designed to get players and teams in peak condition for the start of the new season.
The session is aimed at educating coaches about the importance of various aspects of a pre-season training programme including aerobic and anaerobic training as well as developing motor control movements such as balance, co-ordination, speed, agility and reaction time and the importance of trying to incorporate these into sessions. The session will also provide an insight as to what age players develop certain physical qualities and when players typically reach their optimum in a certain physical attribute.
Please note that this workshop is free of charge and to guarantee your place on the workshop please return the attached application form to us at the Scottish FA South East Region, Mcarthur Pavilion, 42 Peffermill Road, Edinburgh, EH16 5LL.

Free Coaching Workshops – Creative Player & Futsal
Please be aware that these in-service workshops are coming up over the next few weeks. The workshops are for coaches who want to further develop their coaching skills and knowledge to provide high quality coaching sessions for their clubs.
There are two key themes running throughout each workshop;
- Developing Creative Football Players
- Using Futsal as a tool to develop young players
Why Develop Creative Players?
Over the years Scottish football has been synonymous with exciting and creative players who get fans on the edge of their seats. Players developed naturally in a street environment which has now unfortunately been lost and as a result young players now spend less time practicing individual skills which help creative ability.
This workshop is designed to help encourage coaches to develop creative aspects of players and create more technically able performers. Within the game at whatever age and ability level, the 1v1 situation is central to a player’s development. To enable players to master these 1v1 situations from an attacking perspective, particular focus should be placed on individual technique training, because technical skill forms the foundation for tactical play.
By attending this workshop and encouraging young players to be more responsible for practicing key skills you will be able to develop more complete and technical players.
Workshops will take place on the following dates;
Friday 27th November
Queens Centre, Galashiels (Indoor Hall)
8.00pm – 9.30pm
Friday 4th December
Deans Community High School, Livingston (Indoor Hall)
7.30-9.00pm
Friday 4th December

6.30-8.00pm

Scottish FA Launch Women’s Only Coaching Course
As part of the lead up to the Scottish Women’s Senior Team World Cup
qualifier on Thursday 29th October at Tynecastle against Georgia, the
Scottish FA are holding a free Female Only Coaching Course as part of a
series of week long activities leading up to the match.
The course will take place at Peffermill Playing Fields, Peffermill
Road, Edinburgh on Sunday 25th October between 10am and 4pm and is
targeted at new coaches interested in trying coaching for the first
time. Participants will receive the Scottish FA Early Touches Level 1
Certificate as well as a pair of tickets to the World Cup Qualifier on
the Thursday.
National Team Coach Anna Signeul will be present along with some of the
current crop of international players to provide advice to coaches as
well as answering any questions.
Scottish FA Regional Manager, Mark Munro is organising the course as
part of the Scottish FA South East Region’s activities and stated, “The
female game is growing every year and there are more opportunities now
not only for girls to play the game, but for new coaches to become
involved. Also, research tells us that while a number of mums have the
potential skills and interest to become coaches, they are often less
prone to consider coaching than others groups in society.
However, they also have important parenting skills which mums possess
and their natural ability to engage with children have much in common
with the skills needed to coach children. According to research by ICM,
surveys reveal that 77 per cent of mums already enjoy playing a
hands-on role in their children's football and a quarter of mums
regularly kick a ball around with their children, nearly half of mums
(44 per cent) support at matches
This is a very exciting development and we hope that this free course
will provide a good opportunity for more females to become involved with
the sport and as well as providing free coach education, we will help
those interested in continuing find a club to help with this as part of
our coach development programme and provide ongoing support”
If you are interested in attending the course, please contact Aidan
Forbes (Scottish FA South East Office & Events Coordinator) on 0131 667
